Because R-alpha lipoic acid is uniquely both water-soluble and fat-soluble and carries two adjacent sulfhydryl (thiol) groups, it penetrates intracellular compartments to chelate divalent heavy metals while regenerating oxidized Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and intracellular glutathione.
